|There is a widespread acceptance of the standard deviation of periodic returns as a measure of investment risk. However the variability that is measured by the standard deviation is not risk in the laymen's sense, and this is especially true when applied to a DC pension portfolio. This failure of terminology has had important effects on accepted practices. This theme is explored in the talk.|
