Presentation Abstract

This paper will describe the role of the Royal Statistical Society in shaping statistical education within the UK and further afield. The Society has several committees relating to education at all levels - from primary school through to continuing professional development. It is also the principal funding body of the national Centre for Statistical Education.

The work of these various bodies will be discussed and examples given of their activities, achievements and tribulations. The Society's efforts to disseminate good practice through a network of "associate" schools will be explored in some detail. Finally some general conclusions will be drawn about the involvement of national statistical societies in statistical education.
